Geovisualisation as the Essence of Cartography
نویسنده
چکیده
Acknowledging recent questions about the meaning and status of cartography in a world dominated by information and communication technologies, this paper proposes, for the sake of argument, that cartography has had a longer and stronger history than any alternative movements. The technological diversions of recent decades are seen as having contributed to, rather than diminished the power of cartography, whose evolution is also presented in context with a model of the evolution of the human mind. The conclusion, however, recognises the value and diversity of the status quo and seeks continuing research and collaboration between all the communities working with Geospatial Information.

Adaptive Visualisation of Geographic Information on Mobile Devices
iii Abstract The progresses in the fields of mobile Internet and positioning methods have lead to a plethora of new possibilities for cartography in mobile usage environments. However, principles of web mapping cannot simply be transferred to the mobile environment. Likewise the availability of Location Based Services (LBS) has made it possible to develop mobile map services, yet LBS themselves...
متن کاملAbstraction and Scale in Spatialisation
Cartographers have recently become involved in extending geographic concepts and cartographic design approaches to the depiction of non-geographic data archives, using so-called spatialised views or information spaces. Spatialisations differ from ordinary data visualisation and geovisualisation in that they may be explored as if they represented spatial information. This short paper highlights ...
متن کاملGeovisualisation for Planning Support Systems
Planning support systems can be defined as spatial decision support systems, and they consist of three important components, namely: data, models, and geovisualisation (Klosterman 1999). In this chapter, we focus on geovisualisation in planning decision making, in which it has two roles to serve: collaboration and exploration, in particular when it is integrated with the other two components. W...
متن کاملThe 21 st Century World – No Future without Cartography
The term ‘cartography’ only appeared in the early 19 century and since then has been primarily applied to the creation of printed paper products. However the more fundamental essence of ‘cartography’ can be characterised as an expression of one of humanity’s most ancient impulses mapping. This paper reviews its origins, nature and growth and, with the increasing support of technology, its key r...
متن کاملVisual Interfaces for Geographic Data
DEFINITION Geographic data are in essence visual multimedia data. To entry those data with keyboards and to print them as tables of data are not very practical actions. For entry, special devices exist (theodolites, lasers, aerial photos, satellite images, etc.) whereas visual layout is currently named cartography or mapping. Visual interfaces have two facets, allowing the user to present their...
